The Future of Work is Entrepreneurial

Entrepreneurship activities include anything from starting a business to inventing a product, from creative freelancing to running a skilled trades business. Additionally, employers are now looking to hire entrepreneurial thinkers to become intrapreneurs within their organizations.

At The Centre for Entrepreneurship, we look to develop entrepreneurial graduates and believe that all students have the opportunity to act entrepreneurially whether it is through creating a business or taking entrepreneurial skills into their careers. Through workshops facilitated by The Centre, we help to develop the entrepreneurial mindset of Mohawk College students in all programs of study.

The entrepreneurial mindset is a way of adaptable thinking and decision-making in complex, uncertain and dynamic environments. It is a combination of attitudes, skills and behaviours that support the inclination of an individual to discover, evaluate and exploit opportunities. The six characteristics of an entrepreneurial mindset are:

  • Learning from mistakes
  • Risk-taking
  • Adding value
  • Searching for innovative ideas.
  • Adaptability and optimism
  • Grit and perseverance

This way of thinking is for both the entrepreneurs and those students who are not looking to branch out on their own, or for those program areas where entrepreneurship is not applicable. This model enables students to be more intrapreneurial, or think creatively and be more innovative with the way they approach and solve problems within the workplace.

In-Class Workshops

Looking to add entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial content to your course or event? The Centre for Entrepreneurship has in-class programming designed to introduce entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial thinking skills to your students. Workshops can be customized and include hands-on activities to create a more interactive environment. Some of the workshops we offer but are not limited to, are:

Entrepreneurial Leadership

Whether you manage a team or are part of one, leadership is a skill set every strong employee should carry. This interactive workshop focuses on developing leadership skills that focus on creativity, innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving. Learn the difference between leading and managing a team, identify how you can grow as a leader and gain valuable entrepreneurial skills that will push you to be more disruptive in your career. Students develop entrepreneurial characteristics and leadership skills, through innovative thinking, risk optimization and taking advantage of opportunities.

Presentation Skills

An elevator pitch is a versatile presentation style that is used to create interest in a product, service, business or person. It is a key tool all entrepreneurs use to pitch their ideas, whether it’s to investors or their audience. This workshop teaches students how to craft an elevator pitch and gives students valuable experience presenting. Students get creative designing their own pitches, in teams, as they come up with on-the-spot elevator pitches that target a specific audience.

60 Min MVP

An MVP is a company’s Minimum Viable Product or Prototype. Designing a prototype allows new products to be tested in the marketplace. Valuable market research is collected and prototypes are refined to satisfy those findings. This workshop challenges students to launch an idea that only focuses on the big picture. In teams, students brainstorm a new business idea and create a Minimum Viable Product in 60 minutes. Students learn basic web design, business communication skills, and encourages students to be innovative and think critically about promoting their business idea. The final product includes a promotional video and a website.

Business Model Canvas

The Business Model Canvas is a tool used to describe, design, challenge and pivot a company’s business model. It is a visual representation of a business plan, and it includes defining a company’s infrastructure, value proposition, marketing plan, and financials. Classes work collaboratively, using each of the nine building blocks of the canvas to fill out a Business Model Canvas using an existing brand as the case study.
